French Onion Soup - Nick's Riverside Grille, Foggy Bottom, Washington DC

Good flavor; a little spice. Onions perhaps not cooked long enough and not exactly caramelized. But such a cool location! The food doesn't have to be so good. The start of a really fun day.

French Onion Soup - Home

Since I made this soup, I shouldn't be the one to comment on it...but I will. I started it at 3 and we ate at 8, but could have eaten at 7 probably (Livia had soccer practice.) Still, four hours...totally worth it. I used the most fabulous Gruyère the cheese man at the new Wegmans (Calkins Rd.), formerly the Chili Paul cheese man, could dig up. Wegmans baguette for the toast rounds. I used the recipe from Cooks Illustrated, of course! (I think you have to have an account to see it.)

French Onion Soup - The Cottage Hotel, Mendon, NY

The poor waiter. When our soup arrived, my sister-in-law and I both complained that it didn't have enough cheese and hadn't been under the broiler long enough. He said, that's the way we do it here. We said, please, take it back, and put more cheese on it, and put it under the broiler. He did, and when it came back, it was close to perfect. Then, of course, Kieley wanted a cup. So we asked the waiter to bring us another crock prepared exactly the same way. He by this time had become very good-natured about the soup -- we were being nice! -- but still I was a little afraid he might have spit in it. (He denied having done so.)

French Onion Soup - Sherwood Inn, Skaneateles NY

How did I miss this one? A return to the Sherwood Inn, and the soup much improved...have they been reading the blog? Ha. Also, the hostess gave me quarters to feed the parking meter. Excellent service. Great salads too.

French Onion Soup - Yellowfin's, Ocean Park, ME

Excellent, rich broth. Out of 8 people, 6 ordered and enjoyed the soup. One diner complained that there was not enough cheese on top of her soup. Otherwise, superb. Love this restaurant, by the way...if you're ever at the beach in southern Maine, go. (And remember to BYOB—Ocean Park is a dry town.) Photo courtesy Quentin Clark.

French Onion Soup - D & R Depot, LeRoy, NY

Good, but not awesome according to Ki. Note children's scissors for "cutting the cheese." Again, cheese not broiled.

French Onion Soup - Fry Bros. Turkey Ranch, Trout Run PA

Broth good, but cheese not broiled. The turkey wasn't so great either.
